Pragmatics and Semantics

A lot of contemporary philosophical theories are based on semantics. Brandom, for example, focuses on the significance of words (albeit from a pragmatic point of view).

Others adopt an approach that is more holistic to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, that aims to determine how an utterance is perceived by the person listening. However, this approach tends to neglect other elements of pragmatism, like epistemic debates on truth.

What is pragmatism?

Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce conceived the concept and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry that span from theology to philosophy of science, but also found a place in the philosophy of ethics and politics, aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.

The pragmatic maxim is at the core of classical pragmatism. It is a rule that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses through their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experiences of particular situations. This gives rise to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a type of 'inquiry-based epistemology' and an anti-Cartesian explanation of the norms that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists were divided on whether pragmatism was a science-based philosophy that was based on the view that truth is a monism (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James and Dewey).

A major concern for pragmatist philosophers is understanding knowledge. Rorty is a pragmatist who is skeptical of theories of knowledge that are founded on 'immediate experience'. Others, like Peirce and James are skeptical of the theory of correspondence as a source of truth that holds that the most authentic beliefs are those that represent reality 'correctly'.

Other pragmatism-related issues include the relationship between reality and pragmatickr beliefs and the nature of human rationality, the significance of values and virtues, and the significance of life. Pragmatists have also developed a broad variety of ideas and methods in fields such as semiotics, philosophy of language, the philosophy of religion and philosophy of science, ethics, and theology. Some, like Peirce and Royce, are epistemological relativists. However, others believe that such relativism is completely wrong. A renewed the classical pragmatism movement in the latter half of the 20th century has resulted in a myriad of new developments, such as the 'near-side' pragmatics which is concerned with the resolution of confusion and ambiguity and the use of proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, as well as anaphors, and a 'far-side pragmatics that focuses on the semantics of discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being on opposite sides of the continuum, with semantics on the near side and pragmatics on the far side. Carston, for instance, asserts that modern pragmatics has at least three main lines: those who view it as an approach to philosophy that is reminiscent of Grice, those who focus its interaction with grammar, and those who are concerned about the meaning of utterances. Near-side pragmatics is thought to include such issues as clarification of ambiguity or vagueness as well as references to proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, anaphors, and presupposition. It is also believed to cover problems that require definite descriptions.

What is the connection between pragmatism and semantics?

The relationship between pragmatism and semantics is complex. Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to create classical pragmatics. Both were influential thinkers and authored a number of books. Their writings are widely read to this day.

While pragmatism may be a viable alternative to the dominant philosophical tradition of continental and analytic philosophy, it is not without its critics. Some philosophers, for example, have argued that deconstructionism is not a truly new philosophical approach and that pragmatism merely represents a form.

In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism itself has been questioned by technological and scientific advances. Pragmatists, for example, have struggled to reconcile their views on science with the development of evolution theory that was created by Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.

Despite these challenges, pragmatism continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third option to analytic and Continental philosophical traditions, and it has a variety of practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry that has numerous schools of thought developing and incorporating aspects of pragmatism into their own philosophy.
